What Is Coho Salmon: A Comprehensive Guide

    December 7th, 2018

Everything You Need to Know About This Delicate Species

Coho salmon is a mild-flavored variety of salmon that comes from the deep Alaskan waters of the North Pacific Ocean. Its subtle taste makes it a great species to enjoy with delicate preparations and lighter flavor profiles. It's also known as silver salmon because of its bright, shiny skin.

What Does Coho Salmon Taste Like?

Coho has a mild flavor, compared to bolder sockeye. It’s also quite lean, with a delicate texture. These qualities make it an adaptable protein to use in a variety of meals. Its subtle taste and texture pair well with gentle cooking methods, like baking, poaching, or steaming in parchment or aluminum foil. However, coho can be used in any salmon recipe, even if you’re grilling, pan-searing, or broiling the fish.

    Is Coho Sustainable?

Wild Alaskan coho is sustainable because it is harvested from some of the most sustainable fisheries in the world. In the wild, they eat a diet of small fish, squid, and smaller varieties of salmon. This diet naturally gives this species of salmon a pink-orange color and its subtler flavor.

Outside of the North Pacific Ocean, some fish farms cultivate this species, so make sure to look for wild-caught options from Alaska. It’s the most sustainable choice, as open-net pen fish farming negatively affects surrounding ecosystems.

Wild Alaskan Company's fish is always caught in Alaska and processed domestically in the Pacific Northwest — it never leaves the USA.

    Nutrition

Coho salmon is a lean source of protein, containing omega-3 fatty acids and other essential nutrients like vitamin D. It's a healthy fish to eat if you’re monitoring mercury intake, since any salmon species is low in mercury. Consuming it on a regular basis is generally considered safe.
