There's a word I love — experiential — because it connotes the innate power to transform, to turn a moment into a feeling, to flip mundane into magical. When something is positively experiential, it etches itself into your worldview, leaving imprints of new understanding, sensory markers that serve to anchor new memories. This is how I felt when I first had the chance to really dwell in Alaska — an experiential immersion that, to this day, whispers to my soul: unforgettable...epic...among the most beautiful moments of my life.
And for the times when I am not in Alaska, I can taste that remembrance. Literally. Laden in every spoonful of steaming sockeye chowder, in every flake of a beautifully cooked halibut steak. With each perfectly seared weathervane scallop, I can close my eyes and feel the crisp air of my husband’s hometown Homer, Alaska’s late summer; and when I crack open the claw of a Dungeness crab I am transported to a beachside bonfire on Kachemak bay, trading stories with friends, watching the sky tell us its very own.
