Air Fryer Fish Tacos With Crispy Pacific Cod and Avocado Crema

February 20th, 2025

A Crispy, Convenient Taco Dinner in Under 30 Minutes

Basic pantry ingredients become a bold seasoning for these air fryer fish tacos. Perfect for any taco night, these cod tacos are a fun and flavorful meal that everyone will love.

The prep for these tacos couldn’t be easier — if you’re new to cooking seafood, or even cooking with kids, it’s a great recipe that builds on the basics in the kitchen. Pacific cod fillets are dusted with a homemade blend of spices and a touch of cornstarch, then air fried until they develop a crisp exterior. While they’re cooking, you can use that time to make the topping: a cool avocado-cilantro crema and vibrant cabbage slaw.

If you like, you can swap in any variety of mild, wild-caught white fish from Alaska. Try yelloweye rockfish, Pacific halibut, or lingcod as a substitute for Pacific cod.

Ingredients

  • FOR THE TACOS
  • 4 (6 oz.) portions Pacific cod
  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Fresh cilantro, diced tomatoes, and warm tortillas for serving
  • FOR THE AVOCADO CREMA
  • 2 ripe avocados
  • ½ cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • ½ cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 2 limes
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • FOR THE SLAW
  • ½ head purple cabbage, shredded
  • 1 lime
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon sugar

Instructions

1. Gently pat the fillets dry with a clean kitchen towel or paper towel and drizzle with olive oil, using your hands to coat.

2. Make the taco seasoning: In a small bowl, mix together cornstarch, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, chili powder, and smoked paprika. Sprinkle the taco seasoning on both sides of the fish, using your hands to evenly coat.

3. Set your air fryer to 390F and place the fish in a single layer, leaving enough space between the fillets for air and heat to circulate. (You may need to work in batches.) Air-fry the fish for 10 minutes and check doneness. Most species of white fish are medium-done when the fish has reached an internal temperature of 130F on an instant-read thermometer at its thickest part, or when it flakes easily with a fork. Add a couple more minutes of cook time as needed until fish has reached desired doneness.

4. While the cod is cooking, make the avocado crema: Place the avocados in a food processor and blend until smooth. Add the cilantro, Greek yogurt, mayonnaise, lime juice, and salt and blend again. Taste to adjust seasonings as desired.

5. Make the slaw: Toss shredded cabbage with juice of 1 lime, salt, olive oil, and sugar, mixing well to combine.

6. Transfer fish to a serving plate, serving alongside warm tortillas and assorted toppings for easy assembly. If you prefer, you can flake the cod into smaller pieces before serving.

Consuming raw or undercooked meats, poultry, seafood, shellfish, or eggs may increase your risk of food-borne illness, especially if you have a certain medical condition. The FDA recommends an internal temperature of 145°F for cooked fish.
