Spicy Alaskan Crab Pasta With Fire Roasted Tomatoes

February 25th, 2025

A Sweet, Alaskan Crab Pasta With a Kick

Veggie loaded angel hair pasta with generous bites of Dungeness crab and a spicy sauce make for an ideal, and healthy, weeknight dinner. Taking notes from the classic Fra Diavolo pasta, the sauce comes together quickly with fire roasted canned tomatoes and gets a boost of veggies (plus fiber + nutrients) from a bell pepper. Finally, sweet and buttery Dungeness crab contrasts perfectly with the kick from chili flakes.

Other varieties of Alaskan crab would be lovely additions to this pasta, too. Try flaking in morsels of Red King Crab, for a more decadent version of this crab pasta recipe.

Yield

4 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 (6 oz.) packs Dungeness Crab Meat
  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 large or 2 small shallots, thinly sliced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 medium bell pepper, sliced into ½-inch matchsticks
  • ½ to 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes, to taste
  • 1 (15 oz.) can fire roasted tomatoes
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • ½ pound angel hair pasta
  • Lemon wedges, for serving

Instructions

1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.

2. Meanwhile, heat up olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add in the shallot and garlic, cooking for 2 to 3 minutes or until fragrant. Add the bell pepper and chili flakes and cook for another 1 minute, until the bell pepper begins to soften.

3. Stir in the canned tomatoes (do not drain), salt and black pepper. Reduce heat to low and cook, stirring occasionally until slightly thickened, about 5 to 7 minutes.

4. Add angel hair pasta to boiling water, cooking according to package directions until al dente, usually 2 to 3 minutes. Once done, drain the pasta, making sure to reserve about ½ cup of pasta water. Immediately add the hot pasta to the sauce. Stir in Dungeness crab and toss everything to combine over medium heat with about half of the reserved pasta water, until the crab is heated through. Add more pasta water to adjust consistency of the sauce, as desired.

5. To serve, divide the pasta among 4 serving bowls and top with fresh lemon juice. Serve with a green salad, if desired
